Smoke Alarms Available

The Belmont Fire Department has a limited number of smoke alarms that are available to residents at no cost. State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey and Belmont Fire Chief David DeStefano remind you that proper smoke alarm placement and use includes the following:

• Have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside bedrooms, at the top of open stairs and at the base of cellar stairs

• Test smoke alarms once a month

• If the alarm uses regular batteries, change them at least once a year. A “chirping” sound means that its time to change the batteries

• Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years. Alarms are labeled with their date of manufacture. If there is no label, they are older than 10 years and must be replaced.

Smoke alarms are available at Belmont Fire Department Headquarters- Fire Prevention Division, 299 Trapelo Road, Tuesday 1:00-4:00pm and Thursday 8:00-12:00am.

*Battery smoke alarms do not replace hard wired smoke alarm systems.
