Historic District Commission

The Historic District Commission (HDC), appointed by the Select Board, is charged with reviewing additions and/or modifications to properties located within the Town of Belmont's Local Historic Districts. The HDC holds public hearings on these projects to determine the appropriateness of such alterations and issues Certificates of Appropriateness to those projects that meet the Commission's Guidelines.

The HDC strongly encourages applicants to meet with its representatives to review their project prior to submitting the Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness. The Commission will gladly offer advice to those property owners who are considering making alterations to their historic properties. Please contact the Office of Community Development to arrange this meeting.

In its capacity as the town's Historical Commission, the HDC also identifies and evaluates historic properties, provides design review and consultations on properties with preservation restrictions or agreements, and is available to provide guidance to historic property owners regarding potential eligibility as a Local Historic District or nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2016, the HDC worked with a consultant to complete an Historic Resources Survey for Belmont.
