Sewer System Evaluation Survey Underway

The Belmont Office of Community Development – Engineering Division, working closely with the engineering firm of Fay, Spofford & Thorndike (FST), has embarked on a Sewer System Evaluation Survey (SSES).  The purpose of the SSES is to identify specific sources of infiltration and inflow and to determine the appropriate rehabilitation method.  Infiltration and Inflow (I/I) are the introduction of clean water into the sanitary sewer system.  This additional flow can cause the sewer system to surcharge resulting in the back-up of plumbing systems in private homes.  Also, the additional flow is treated as part of the overall flow sent to the Deer Island Sewer Treatment Plant.  Treating this additional flow is a major expense to the Town of Belmont.  Catch basins, area drains, roof drains, sump pumps, broken sewer pipes and deteriorated pipe joints are leading causes of I/I.

Night Time Flow Evaluation

Night time flow evaluations are underway.  Flow Assessment Services is performing the investigation which will help determine baseline infiltration flows in the sanitary sewer system.  Listed below are the Daily Location Reports.
