Online Permitting

Please read this entire message before entering the Online Permitting Portal.

The Belmont Building Department recently upgraded its in-house and online permitting platform. All users will have to register for the new platform after the upgrade. It should only take you 3 to 5 minutes to complete the new registration process, and no PIN number will be required – just be sure to have your current license and insurance information at hand before you begin the process. Once newly registered, you will be able to apply for Building Permits. The system will remember your registration information and fill it in for you each time you start a new application.

The new platform has some important new features, including:

  • NOTIFICATIONS Messages will go out automatically via email each time an action takes place regarding your permit, such as application approval, completed inspections, failed inspections, and permit closures.
  • DRAFTS Applications you are working on can be saved for up to 90 days.
  • HISTORY An up-to-date list of all your permit projects and linked permits will be available to you in summary form.

THIS PORTAL DOES NOT PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE PERMIT HISTORY OF A PROPERTY.  
Please call 617-993-2650 or visit the Office of Planning & Building for historical permits, status of permits, and inspection records.

CONTRACTOR REGISTRATION

All contractors must be registered in order to utilize the online permitting application. To register, please include the following documentation:

  • Applicable Contractor License(s)
  • Department of Public Safety "S" License (for Electrical Contractors conducting Security work only)
  • Liability Insurance Certificate

After registering, your information should be valid in several communities including:

Ashland, Auburn, Belmont, Billerica, East Bridgewater, Eastham, Holden, Holliston, Lynnfield, Medfield, Melrose, Orleans, Pembroke, Sherborn, Weston, Wrentham.

PERMIT INFORMATION

Online permitting is available for the following permit types:

Building Permits: bathroom & kitchen with NO structural changes; insulation, roofing, siding, and windows

All online Building Permit applications must include the following documents:

      *For Dumpster Permits: Please contact the Board of Health at 617-993-2720

In addition, the following information is required for these specific project types:

  • Bathroom (no structural changes): Floor Plan
  • Insulation/Air sealing: R values (data field provided)
  • Kitchen remodeling (no structural changes): Floor Plan
  • Roofing: no additional documents required
  • Siding: no additional documents required
  • Window replacement: U-factor (data field provided)

Sheet Metal, Electrical, Plumbing, and Gas Permits

All online Sheet Metal, Electrical, Plumbing, Gas permit applications must include the following documents:

​​​​​​​Projects beyond the scope identified above must be submitted using an in-person, paper permit application; an online application is not allowed. 

  • Paper permits are required for the following: Additions, Decks, Dormers, Interior Renovations, and ANY project requiring structural changes.
  • We accept cash or check payment for in-person applications (check is preferred); we cannot accept credit cards.

FEE PAYMENT

After you complete the permit application you must click "Save."

You then must click "Add to Cart" and "Complete Your Purchase" at the bottom of the portal.

Failure to complete the Fee Payment for a permit application will delay approval of the permit application.
