Mapping Information

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has developed new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) for the Town of Belmont and other Mystic River Watershed communities.  The Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Flood Hazard Management Program (FHMP) is the State Coordinating Office for the National Flood Insurance Program.  FHMP has partnered with FEMA to assist with the administration and management of FEMA’s flood insurance mapping program in Massachusetts.

A general schedule for adoption and implementation of the flood maps has been developed by FEMA:

  • Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps released September/October 2007.
  • A 90 day appeal period follows the release of the preliminary maps.
  • After review of any additional information brought forth during the 90 day appeal period, FEMA then issues a Letter of Final Determination which establishes the final flood elevations.
  • The issuance of the Letter of Final Determination initiates the beginning of a six-month adoption period.  Communities must adopt or amend its floodplain management regulations during this period or lose coverage under the flood insurance program.

The Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Belmont have not been updated since 1982.  It is possible that properties not currently in the floodplain will now be in the floodplain.  Please check out the documents below for further information.  The Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps and the accompanying report for the Town of Belmont are available for viewing at the Office of Community Development between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.  Please contact the Office of Community Development at 617-993-2650 with additional comments or questions.
