The Belmont Fire Department is asking those citizens who have a fire hydrant near their home or business to clear it of snow and ice following snow storms this winter.

“We do our best to shovel out each and every hydrant in town, but doing so takes several days,” said Chief David Frizzell. “If we need to use a hydrant that hasn’t been shoveled out yet, it significantly delays the time it takes for the firefighters to get water on the fire.”

The Fire Department recommends shoveling 3 feet of clearance all the way around the fire hydrant, with clear access to the street. This gives enough room for firefighters to hook up hose to the hydrant and open the hydrant safely.
