Welcome to the Belmont Municipal Light Department!

115kV Substation Project

The Light Board (which is the Board of Selectman) approved the recommendation of the new substation to be built at Purecoat property, which was presented by the 115 kV Substation Site Selection Committee at its July 26th meeting. The committee痴 recommendations regarding the Purecoat property will be presented at Town Meeting in early Fall.

Any questions regarding the 115kV Substation Project can be emailed to BMLDProject@belmont-ma.gov or call BMLD at 617-993-2800. Customers who wish to be notified of any developments regarding the 115kV Substation Project should email BMLDProject@belmont-ma.gov to be added to the distribution list.

We welcome your input and look forward to Town Meeting in the Fall.

15L2 circuit information

BMLD crews continue work to isolate BMLD customers from transients along the 13.8 kV interconnection between NStar and BMLD.

BMLD employees have been working throughout the past several months to improve this circuit by replacing the aging cable and transferring the power to another circuit to eliminate the chance of any additional high-voltage transients that have caused sporadic outages and voltage dips in the past year. Work on this project is 90% complete.

Outage

On Wednesday, 7/28/2010, at approximately 12:08 PM, there was a system disturbance on BMLD’s supply interconnection. This disturbance resulted in an overvoltage condition on BMLD’s 13.8 kV system. To protect customer owned equipment, BMLD’s 15L2 circuit has been programmed to open during overvoltage conditions and to re-close after 5 seconds. This momentary outage was developed to reduce the duration of the overvoltage condition. We realize that these momentary outages are an inconvenience and appreciate your continued patience as we work to resolve this issue.

The outage on Thursday morning, July 22, 2010 which affected approximately 200 BMLD customers on the 15L2 circuit was unrelated to the ongoing problem. BMLD determined that the outage was caused by animal contact. The 51- minute outage, which affected customers in the Mill Street and upper Concord Avenue area occurred at approximately 6:14 AM, with power restored at 7:05 AM.

Reminders

This has been one of the warmest summers we have had in quite a while! BMLD encourages customers to continue to conserve energy by rescheduling and reducing their electrical consumption when possible. BMLD will continue to do its part by monitoring, maintaining and transferring the load during times of peak consumption.

As always . remember to protect appliances and electronics from voltage instability caused by momentary power fluctuations or outages. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, surge protectors, and surge suppressors will best protect this equipment. These protection devices can be purchased locally.

Should you have any questions, please call 617-993-2800.
