Welcome to the Belmont Municipal Light Department!

Hurricane Earl is moving up the coast and is expected to affect us early Saturday morning. We are reminding BMLD customers to take storm precautions and review their preparations.

BMLD is gearing up for any potential effects of Hurricane Earl as it moves closer to our shores. Our crews will be on call and ready to go in the event there are power outages from any high winds and heavy rains. (Click on our outage tab to see how you can prepare and what to do in the case of an outage.)

Streets could be blocked because of fallen trees, tree limbs and downed wires. If you do see a downed power line stay away from it. It could be live. Call BMLD at 617-993-2800 to report any downed wires or outages.

Update - Week of August 30th

Meet Belmont

BMLD staff had an opportunity to meet with many local residents at the 8th annual Meet Belmont held last week at the Chenery Middle School. BMLD representatives provided information about energy conservation and safety programs at the event.

Congratulations to the winner of BMLD’s energy conservation basket who received a basket filled with energy saving materials, including a programmable thermostat, caulking, a compact fluorescent light bulb, switch plate sealers, and an LED night light.

Outage Notification

There were no major outages during the past week in the BMLD service area.

BMLD crews continue work to isolate BMLD customers from transients along the 13.8 kV interconnection between NStar and BMLD. BMLD employees have been working throughout the past several months to improve this circuit by replacing the aging cable and transferring the power to another circuit to eliminate the chance of any additional high-voltage transients that have caused sporadic outages and voltage dips in the past year. BMLD crews have completed their work on the 15L2 circuit and are working on the 15L1 circuit.

Reminders...

This week’s predicted heat wave will mean more air conditioners being turned on to beat the heat and humidity, and resulting in more load put on our system. BMLD encourages customers to continue to conserve energy by rescheduling and reducing their electrical consumption when possible. BMLD will continue to do its part by monitoring, maintaining and transferring the load during times of peak consumption.

At the same time, the tropics are heating up and hurricane season is in full swing… Meteorologists recommend that we all keep an eye on the approaching tropical storms. BMLD staff, like all utilities along the eastern seaboard, will be watching these storms closely.
