For couples being married by a person using a One Day Solemnizer Certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts:
A person who is not a recognized member of the clergy in Massachusetts or a Justice of the Peace (such as a relative or family friend) may obtain one-day special permission from the Governor to perform a marriage. Call the Governor's office at (617) 727-5787 to obtain an application for a one-time special appointment to solemnize a marriage.
A $25 fee is paid to the Commissions Division of the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth and a one day solemnizer certificate is sent to the approved solemnizer.
The certificate must be submitted with the signed marriage license after the ceremony, only as follows:
On the Certificate of Marriage prepared by the Town Clerk,
The Solemnizer must complete SECTION 20 ONLY:
· Use permanent black ink only, make no stray marks
· The month must be written out, such as September 30, 2009, not 9/30/09
· If the wedding does not take place at a temple, church, synagogue or recognized place of worship, the Solemnizer must write the street address instead of naming the location. For example, in lieu of Belmont Town Hall, it should read
455 Concord Avenue, Belmont
· After the Solemnizer signature, he/ she must enter the word Solemnizer
· The address under the Solemnizer signature is the home address of the Solemnizer
After the wedding, the Solemnizer must include the original Solemnizer Certificate issued by the Secretary of State along with the signed license and mail to the following address for official recording:
Belmont Town Clerk
455 Concord Avenue
Belmont, MA 02478
