+ How Effective Are Vitamin D Supplements? Vitamin D is important for bone and muscle strength, but the belief that it significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and numerous other conditions is questionable. Although Vitamin D supplements are still widely used, well designed studies have established that the supplements are not needed by most people because we need only small-to-moderate amounts of vitamin D. Sunshine and dietary intake provide adequate vitamin D for most people. Dr. JoAnn Manson led one of the largest and most respected randomized trials that contradicted the belief that vitamin D supplements are a cure-all. In this discussion she explains the difference between natural vitamin sources, fortified foods, and supplements. She also addresses the importance of the structure of scientific studies in determining the effects of medications and supplements.

+ Biodiversity in the Sixth Mass Extinction. The sixth mass extinction currently underway is due to a combination of climate change and destruction of natural habitats. Both crises are the result of our energy, industrial, and food production systems that have upended Nature. Biologist Michael Reed explains how the vitality of our planet depends on the health of ecosystems. Using migratory birds as an example, he describes the interdependence of different forms of life: birds, animals, fish, insects, plants and terrain. Dr. Reed also suggests why some species are better able to adapt to the climate and extinction crises than others. 00:25:00

+ 2000 Years of Oceans and Climate - The major ocean currents strongly influence regional climate stability. Today’s rapidly warming oceans will ultimately alter major currents such as the AMOC, with huge consequences for global climate. In order to predict when and where these climate shifts will occur, oceanographers gather data over a long period of time and compare that data with historical variations in ocean temperature and currents. Hali Kilbourne’s focus on 2000 years of the relationship between oceans and climate provides important data for accurate climate models. In this discussion Dr. Kilbourne describes how scientists collect and analyze the data, and what oceanographers can predict regarding sea level changes, stability of major currents and the coming impact on global climate. 00:33:53

+ Harvesting Electricity Out Of Thin Air: The air contains an enormous amount of electricity. Clouds are full of it. But how to actually capture it for a continuous energy resource? Dr. Jun Yao and his colleagues at UMass-Amherst have created a small-scale cloud they call the “generic Air-gen effect” that produces a reliable stream of electricity that can be harvested for general use. Dr. Yao describes how the Air-gen innovation was developed, how the electricity is harvested from the air via a special material made of protein nanowires, and when the device can be scaled up for general use. 00:29:42

On the Job
+ It's the day we've all been waiting for! Demo at the Sherborn jobsite. We finally have the all clear to put this old house out of it's misery. Crumbling foundations, wet basements and built right next to the wetlands, it's time for this thing to go. We use the Link Belt 210 this time around instead of my baby 305.5 and the work goes fast. The sooner we get this thing down, crunched up and hauled away, the sooner we can get started on our new construction, contemporary farm house build.
